PatriciaUrquiola

Please tell us the main stimulus that have led you to study Design and Architecture?
I wanted to be an architect from when I was a child, I was very curious and good at math. I then studied architecture at the Madrid Polytechnic, but soon felt the need to step out of my comfort zone and so moved to Milan to finish my studies at the Politecnico di Milano. Here the architecture course was very different, it included a lot of industrial design, so this naturally mixed into my architecture background. At the Politecnico I met Achille Castiglioni, he was my professor and my thesis mentor; his classes were incredible, he would arrive with a big bag of objects every time and wewould talk about their form, the relationship with the human body, the layers of popular knowledge that gave life to incredible objects…
What is the most important Concept that serves as basis of your creations?
Achille Castiglioni taught me to always establish the “fundamental element” of a project as he used to call. It is the main element that each project is based on. Through the process you can make mistakes, you can compromise certain aspects and you can get lost; but the fundamental element always keeps you on track. His words are always on mind and they serve as a basis on all my projects, a starting point to building an empathic connection with the user that will eventually interact with my projects. Together with the brands I collaborate with we always strive to push the limits of research and technology to constantly move towards better design and architecture; this is a fundamental aspect to my scope of work.
What was the biggest incident that has influenced your existence?
I was very lucky when I was young, I had the opportunity of working with great mentors in my early years: Castiglioni obviously, who changed my take on architecture and design at university and whom I later had the chance to work with ; Vico Magistretti and Maddalena De Padova who taught me the importance of experimenting, the value of mistakes. They had a lot of significance in my journey and the things I learnt from them I still carry them with me to this day. If today I have my own studio and I work with some of the most important brands and designers it is also thanks to these events and people.
How do you see the digital aspects going forward in the area of design, interior and architecture? What would be your concrete intentions behind such challenge?
I believe that we are in the middle of an important moment of transition for design: we need to find ways to rewrite the rules of this industry, to reinvent the way in which we design, the materials we source, the processes we use, and technology will be a main tool for this evolution. The design industry is really questioning our sustainable impact and we will need to move within increasingly complex digital and non-digital frameworks; our role as designers will be above all to ask ourselves questions, to interpret the evolution of needs and the potential of research. Such questions are our current challenges: these will lead to change, evolution and innovation in the world of design and architecture.
We believe that innovative challenges may meet obstacles and resistance. How do you overcome such difficulties?
Obstacles will always arise whenever you want to implement change and innovation. When one designs for important brands, there are a lot of factors to take into consideration and the brand’s identity needs to always be respected. With Cassina we always try to look to the future with an open mind to innovation and technology while keeping the strong heritage of brand. We often look to the archives and every year we represent historic pieces, like we did this year, for example, with Charlotte Perriand’s Mexique bar stools and tables. We also however, look to how the world of design is changing, how materials are adapting to the need for a more sustainable industry.

What interests you most at this moment within the Japanese culture?
I have great curiosity and admiration for Japan, I am always very happy to travel there. The culture and its people are fascinating and I have always wanted to take some time off to see it properly. In the past, Japan has served as a source of inspiration for various projects, most recently for the Hayama cabinet for Cassina that was presented during the Milan Design Week 2019. Just like a Haori, the cabinet was developed following a formal cut which plays on volume and subtraction. In June I traveled to Tokyo for the third edition of the Loewe Craft Prize where I had the privilege of admiring a range of media and modes of craftsmanship: the winner, Genta Ishikuza, used a urushi lacquer technique that originates between the 7th and 8th century, a wonderful piece of work that was both modern and embedded in the Japanese culture.
